Due to new possibilities for using sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) trash for electricity generation, and the production of 2nd generation ethanol and others chemicals, the interest for its recovery has increased. However, the question of how much trash can be removed from sugarcane field still needs to be clarified. This study evaluated the amount of dry matter, nutrients content, structural compounds and efficiency of the enzymatic hydrolysis of the hydrothermal pretreated materials for tops and dry leaves in samples from sugarcane varieties. Tops and dry leaves present differences in nutrients content and moisture. Therefore, the amount of trash to be collected should not be simply based on percentages, but also should take into account the different... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to produce bioethanol from enzymatic hydrolysates of cassava pulp, a by-product of cassava flour manufacturing, using an alcohol-tolerant Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain. First, the best operational condition of the starch hydrolysis process was determined through a complete factorial design (24), with triplicates at the central point. The independent variables evaluated were: the concentrations of α-amylase (Termamyl 2X) and glucoamylase (AMG 300L) and both liquefaction and saccharification times. The most favorable hydrolysis condition in the assay was achieved using 0.517 mL AMG.g starch-1 and 0.270 mL Termamyl.g starch-1, with liquefaction and saccharification times of 1 and 2 h, respectively. The broth obtained at... |

The enzymatic hydrolysis of food waste by commercially available enzymes and the subsequent ethanol fermentation of the hydrolysates by Saccharomyces cerecisiae H058 were studied in this work. The optimum batch enzymatic conditions were found to be saccharification pH of 4.5, temperature of 55!, glucoamylase concentration of 120 u/g, α-amylase concentration of 10 u/g, solid-liquid ratio of 1: 0.75 (w/w). Fed batch hydrolysis process was started with a solid-liquid ratio of 1: 1 (w/w), with solid food waste added at time lapse of 2 h to get a final solid-liquid ratio of 1: 0.5 (w/w). After 4 h of reaction, the reducing sugar concentration reached 194.43 g/L with a enzymatic digestibility of 93.12%. Further fermentation of the batch and fed batch enzymatic... |

Enzymatic hydrolysis of cuttlefish viscera by Protamex, Pepsin, Delvolase and Multifect Neutral was investigated in a batch reactor during 6 hours with an hourly sampling. The influence of the enzyme used and the hydrolysis conditions (operating pH, temperature) was studied with regards to the extent of proteolytic degradation and to molecular weight distribution of the peptides. After 360 min of hydrolysis, cuttlefish viscera treated with Pepsin yielded significantly (p < 0.05) higher protein recoveries compared to the substrate autolysed or treated with other external proteases. However, the amino acid composition showed that this was Protamex hydrolysis which gave the highest percentage of essential amino acids. At least, according to the FPLC... |

The by-products (viscera, heads, backbone and skins) of tongue sole coming from a Senegal frozen fisherie plant, were hydrolized with the Protamex® enzyme.Degrees of hydrolysis of 30 and 19% were obtained respectively with 40°C and 50°C.The results also showed that the proteins contained in these by-products are completely solubilized by the action of this protease at the end of 180 minutes of hydrolysis. The biochemical characterization showed that these hydrolysates are rich in proteins (61%) and minerals (10%). However, the hydrolysates contain peptides of lower molecular sizes 1760Da.Lastly, these hydrolysates have high nutritional value in order to set up table fowls because they have in big quantity 9 essential amino acids for the poultry feed. |

Filamentous fungi are considered to be the most important group of microorganisms for the production of plant cell wall degrading enzymes (CWDE), in solid state fermentations. In this study, two fungal strains Aspergillus niger MS23 and Aspergillus terreus MS105 were screened for plant CWDE such as amylase, pectinase, xylanase and cellulases (β-glucosidase, endoglucanase and filterpaperase) using a novel substrate, Banana Peels (BP) for SSF process. This is the first study, to the best of our knowledge, to use BP as SSF substrate for plant CWDE production by co-culture of fungal strains. The titers of pectinase were significantly improved in co-culture compared to mono-culture. Furthermore, the enzyme preparations obtained from monoculture and co-culture... |

Ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis is a recent process, increasingly employed for plant biomass liquefaction and the recovery of soluble biomolecules. However, to our knowledge, it has never been used on seaweeds, particularly wet ones. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of three processes on the liquefaction of the red seaweed Grateloupia turuturu Yamada: enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), and their combination, ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis (UAEH). These comparisons will allow the identification as to which process achieves the highest extraction yield of water-soluble compounds. For this purpose, experiments were conducted at 40 °C for 6 h using an enzymatic cocktail of four... |

This work aimed at the production of cellulases from pretreated sugarcane bagasse by the filamentous fungus Trichoderma harzianum IOC 3844 and their application in the hydrolysis of this same substrate, for a future use in second-generation ethanol production. The production of cellulases was optimized, which resulted in high enzymatic activities after 42 hrs of process in an instrumented bioreactor (CMCase 27,017 U x L-1; FPase 1,225 U x L-1; and β-glucosidase 609 U x L-1). The enzymatic extract was concentrated by using a hollow fiber membrane filtration system. The concentrated extract was applied in the hydrolysis of pretreated sugarcane bagasse, after 28 hrs of enzymatic reaction, displaying a similar catalytic performance of that attained... |

The use of surfactants to improve enzymatic hydrolysis of the macroalgae Sargassum muticum has been investigated. Visible absorption spectroscopy has been used to quantify the solubilization of both polysaccharides and phlorotannins in the hydrolysates. After total extraction, results showed that Sargassum muticum contained 2.74% (expressed in percent of the dry weight of the algae) of phlorotannins whose 32 % were in the cell wall. This result shows that it is important to access to the parietal phlorotannins. To reach this objective, we chose the enzymatic approach for destructurating the cell wall of the algae. The use of 5% dry weight (DW - 5% by weight of hydrolyzed algae) of an enzymatic mix containing a commercial beta-glucanase, a commercial... |
